Labia Theatre - Gardens, Cape Town

The Labia Theatre, located at 68 Orange Street in Gardens, Cape Town, is the oldest independent cinema in South Africa. The Labia, originally an Italian Embassy ballroom, was opened by Dowager Princess Labia in May 1949 as a theatre for the staging of live performances. Known for its eclectic and art-house film screenings, the theatre offers a vintage movie-going experience with comfortable seating, a bar, and a café. It remains a beloved cultural hub for film lovers, offering everything from indie films to live theatre.

For over 40 years, the Labia Theatre has offered alternative cinema, attracting discerning audiences who appreciate its high-quality films and nostalgic, old-world charm. With the help of crowdfunding and the Digital Gold Fund, the Labia upgraded to digital projection, ensuring superior picture and sound while maintaining its unique atmosphere. The theatre continues to enhance its facilities, including upgrades to the bar, terrace, and catering options, to offer an even more enjoyable experience.
