Libertas Parva - Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands

---------------------------- PERMANENTLY CLOSED --------------------------------

Dorp Street, in Stellenbosch, is one of the longest rows of old buildings surviving in any major town in southern Africa. And it is on this street that we find Libertas Parva. Originally built in 1773 by Lambertus Pick, this finely restored homestead has the only remaining pre-1790 baroque central gable in Stellenbosch and was once the home of the Krige family, whose daughter Sybella married Jan Christiaan Smuts (2nd prime minister of South Africa) while he was a student lodging diagonally opposite at Ackermannhuis. They were married in the left front room of Libertas Parva on the 30th April 1897. Today it houses the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Museum.

The Museum is home to works of art by Irma Stern, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef and Anton van Wouw among other South African artists. The Stellenryck Wijn Museum is situated in the original wine cellar, its exhibits include old vats, presses and implements which tell the story of wine-making over the years. There are some extremely rare exhibits including a wine jug from Biblical Israel, Greek and Roman amphorae, a Scandinavian beaker and some fine examples of early furniture and glassware, including bottles from the Dutch-ruled Cape of the 18th Century.
