Paternoster boasts a theater, Die Koelkamers, a wine and tasting lounge, the famous Panty Bar, along with a variety of restaurants, shops, and a pharmacy. This charming village is one of the oldest fishing settlements on South Africa's West Coast, located 15 km from Vredenburg and 145 km north of Cape Town at Cape Columbine, nestled between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay. The town covers 195 hectares and is home to approximately 1,883 residents.
The origin of the name "Paternoster" is uncertain. Many believe it derives from the Latin for "Our Father," referencing prayers said by Catholic Portuguese sailors during shipwrecks. An old map by Pieter Mortier refers to it as St. Martins Paternoster, which hints that the name could also be connected to Paternoster Row in London, near St. Martins Court. Some suggest it may refer to the beads worn by the Khoi tribe, known as Paternosters.
This area experiences most of its rainfall during winter and features a Mediterranean climate that supports the growth of the wildflowers the West Coast is renowned for. The region is rich in marine and wildlife, offering opportunities for whale, dolphin, seal, and penguin watching, as well as birdwatching, with over 225 bird species recorded.
In spring, Paternoster transforms into a floral haven, with wildflowers blanketing the landscape and forming the southwestern edge of the famous Namaqualand flower carpets. Visitors can explore the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, which spans 263 hectares along the rugged coastline, featuring various picnic spots and braai facilities. The Cape Columbine Lighthouse, built in 1936 on Castle Rock, is the last manually operated lighthouse in South Africa. Its beam is visible from approximately 50 km away and is often the first lighthouse seen by ships arriving from Europe.
