Royal Johannesburg Golf Club (formally Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club), located in Linksfield North, Johannesburg, is one of South Africa’s most iconic and historic golf clubs, established in 1890. Initially founded as the Johannesburg Golf Club, it received its royal designation in 1931 from King George V. Over the years, the club has grown into one of the country’s premier golfing destinations and is known for its beautiful setting, challenging courses, and rich history. It’s also renowned for its contribution to South African golf, having hosted numerous prestigious tournaments and events.
The Club is the product of a merger of Royal Johannesburg Golf Club and the former Kensington Golf Club in 1998. The first merger of its kind in South Africa.
The club features two world-class 18-hole courses, the East and West Courses:
1. East Course: Known as one of the most challenging and well-designed layouts in South Africa, the East Course stretches 6,945 meters (7,600 yards) from the back tees. It is renowned for its length and requires skillful, strategic play with its narrow fairways, water hazards, and bunkers. The East Course has hosted multiple South African Open Championships and other major tournaments, solidifying its status as a championship course.
2. West Course: A slightly shorter but equally impressive course, the West Course spans approximately 6,200 meters (6,780 yards). It is more accessible for casual players but still offers a challenging experience, with undulating greens, bunkers, and scenic tree-lined fairways. The West Course is favored by both beginners and advanced players and provides a well-rounded golfing experience.
Both courses provide golfers with beautiful surroundings, views of the lush landscape, and excellent facilities. The clubhouse offers a bar, restaurant, pro shop, conference facilities, and locker rooms. The club also provides practice areas, a driving range, and access to professional coaching.
