Mkambati Nature Reserve

Mkambati Nature Reserve

Mkambati is a wonderfully preserved unspoilt piece of the Wild Coast, made up of grassy plains and forested ravines that descend into swamp forests surrounding the Mkambati River that finally opens up into the Indian Ocean.

In Springtime, the hills erupt in with a dazzling array of beautiful flowers and orchids, which in turn attracts a variety of birdlife. Large mammals such as red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, and eland can be seen grazing the grassy pastures.

Exploring the rugged coastline, especially at low tide will reveal assortment of sea shells and curious invertebrates.

The Mkambati Nature Reserve has 2 major rivers that flank it northern and southern borders. Canoes can be hired to explore deep into the Msikaba River for about 2 km. Still further upstream rapids and refreshing waterfalls await the intrepid explorer.
