Fort Klapperkop Military Museum - Pretoria

If you find yourself looking for things to do in Pretoria, make sure to add Fort Klapperkop Military Museum to your to-do list. Restored and declared a military museum in 1963, this site offers panoramic views of Jacaranda City, a commemorative war statue and an old steam locomotive - which was the last tram used in Pretoria.

South Africa is a country rich in diversity, but it wasn't always that way. On 11 October 1899 war broke out between Great Britain, the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State. This South African War was also called the Second Boer War or Anglo-Boer War. During this time, Pretoria was surrendered to the British.

Fort Klapperkop was the third erected fort before the war and was manned by maximum of 30 soldiers, but by the time the war had begun, the soldiers' numbers dropped down to 16 men as the others were called out to active duty.

Although the fort never saw active combat, it has now become a South African national monument and a Gauteng Provincial Heritage Site.

Fort Klapperkop was designed with a moat around it and a drawbridge; however the moat was never filled with water.

This museum is one of the best kept military museums in South Africa and houses an incredible display of rifles, artifacts and furniture used during the Anglo-Boer War. Guided tours and school programs can be arranged, and picnic, braai and event facilities are also available. You will often find people use the rough terrain for hiking and biking.

If you wander down the hillside, you can visit the horses in their stables and if you are there around closing time, you should see the regular herd of zebras who aren't afraid to get close.

The Fort is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays and public holidays.
