Ghaub Caves - Oshikoto Region, Namibia

The Ghaub Caves are located on the Ghaub Nature Reserve in the northern part of Namibia, near the town of Tsumeb in the Otavi Mountain Region. These limestone caves are one of the lesser-known natural attractions in Namibia and offer a fascinating underground experience for visitors. The caves are renowned for their impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique rock formations.

The Ghaub Caves stretch deep into the earth and were historically significant for the local indigenous people. Today, they are popular among tourists for guided cave tours that provide insights into the natural geology and history of the region. The surrounding Ghaub Nature Reserve offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the scenic beauty of the Otavi Highlands.

The cave was discovered by Dr. Henry Fedder in 1914 and is the third largest cave in Namibia going as far as approximately 38m deep and stretching about 2,5km long with many different channels. You are able to book a tour of the cave which usually lasts about two hours, which includes the 3km drive from the main buildings. Tour organisers supply helmets and headlamps, but visitors need to ensure they are wearing proper hiking boots or sports shoes as climbing forms part of the visit.

The cave is made up of 4 different rock types, the main geology being made up of dolomite and sand stone as well as lime stone, which is found to be partly interset with crystal stone. The inside of the cave contains a deep and extensive lake. During March 2010 a team of professional divers from Italy and Switzerland dived 17m into the lake, but were unable to establish where the lake ended or how deep it really is.

The caving adventure can be booked for either the morning between 09:00 and 11:00 or the afternoon between 15:00 and 18:00. Visitors are advised to be cautious of low hanging rocks and sharp edges, and a special caution need to be brought regarding the fact that the caves are not suitable for people who suffer from claustrophobia.
