The border between Namibia and South Africa is over 960 kilometres long and stretches from the West Coast of South Africa all the way up through Kalahari Desert. The Vioolsdrift Border Control is located on this border between Namibia (Noordoewer) and South Africa (Vioolsdrift) and is open 24 hours. Although the Border Control is manned by police, SARS and the Department of Home Affairs, crossing the border at Vioolsdrift is a relatively easy task as long as all the relevant paperwork is in place prior to traveling.
Considerations before traveling:
If you are traveling from South Africa you need to have a ZA sticker on your which can be purchased at an AA agent or at outdoor retailers, a valid passport for showing at the border, which should be valid for another 6 months from the date you leave South Africa, a valid driver's license, and cash to pay a road user's fee. It is important to note that your vehicle's papers must be in order - proof of ownership of the vehicle or rental company, your drivers license, and a police clearance certificate etc. The police at the border post will check your engine number, chassis, trailer number and license details. Another important point is to make sure your vehicles insurance is covered while you are traveling in Namibia. A letter from the bank financing your vehicle must also be obtained giving authorisation to take the vehicle across the border, including dates. All documentation needs to be signed by a Commissioner of Oaths. If you are using a rental car, make sure you have a letter from the rental company giving you permission to take the vehicle out of the country.
Remember: that Namibia runs a Daylight saving system and on the first Sunday in April, Namibians set their watches back by an hour for winter. Which means that 09:00 in South Africa, is 08:00 in Namibia during winter and as of the first Sunday in September, the time is the same for the duration of the summer.
