Previously known as the Hans Strijdom Nature Reserve, the Mokolo Dam Nature Reserve lies just north east of the Marakele National Park and roughly 50 kilometres south west of Lapalala Wilderness Game Reserve. The Reserve is a part of the Waterberg Biosphere, the aim of which is sustainable and eco-friendly conservation and development of the region. The dam, which was established in 1980, is fed by the Mokolo River and lies between beautiful sandstone mountains and cliffs. The Reserve comprises both sweet and sourveld and a diversity of wildlife feed off the surrounding grassy plains.
Although the reserve covers an area of 4600 hectares, a lot of this is covered by water when the dam is full creating almost 8km of waterfront. Given the amount of waterfront and size of the dam, it is understandable that the reserve attracts many enthusiastic anglers and fishermen. Increasing numbers of bass anglers are visiting the dam and there are reports of bass of over 4kg being caught. For those looking to fish please note that limited bank fishing is possible around the camp site (The shoreline of the dam is heavily infested with Phragmites reeds) but a boat is ideal. Float tubes are not a good idea due to the presence of crocodiles. The reserve is also a hot spot for birders, many of whom head out in boats in search of the resident waterfowl: herons, kingfishers, geese, ducks, bitterns and jacana.
With all kinds of water related activities such as boating, canoeing and kayaking, it is no surprise that Mokolo Dam Nature Reserve is growing in popularity. One of the dams most loved activities is the romantic sunset cruise. Mokolo has no formal accommodation, but basic camp sites are available which makes it an excellent spot for those who enjoy the rustic getaway. For those who are just looking for somewhere to spend the day there are wonderful picnic spots around the dam.
