Modjadjiskloof in the Limpopo Province is home to what is thought to be the largest Baobab tree in the world, the Sunland Big Baobab. The tree, which has been recorded as the widest of its species in the world, has received international attention, and has even graced the cover of the Wall Street Journal. It has a circumference of 46,8 metres and is carbon dated to be around 6000 years old. This is where it gets interesting! When baobabs become a thousand years old, they begin to hollow inside. In the Big Baobab this has resulted in wonderful caverns and caves, where the world famous Baobab Tree Bar now amazes visitors. The tree bar can accommodate more than 60 people and is a wonderful venue for private parties!
The Big Baobab is on the Sunland Mangos Farm which was bought in 1989 by Doug and Heather van Heerden. The tree is important both historically and ecologically and is home to many animals and birds, as well as providing food for many others. The van Heerdens fiercely protect the tree and the surroundings and a warning goes out to anyone who doesnt share their views!
The farm also offers quadbiking. Doug, who has been a motorbike fanatic his whole life, has built some exciting off road tracks for motorbikes and quad bikes on the farm. One is an 11 kilometre track crisscrossing Sunland Mango Farm (110 ha) and incorporating a tricky, seasonal river. Visitors are invited to bring their own bikes or hire a quad from them and have some extreme fun.
