Letaba Elephant Hall (museum) is rated by many as one of the favourite destinations within the Kruger National Park. This extraordinary place is a must visit if you love elephants. Over thirty years ago seven impressive elephant bulls, all with tusks weighing more than 50 kg each, could be found in Kruger National Park. Today six of the Magnificent Sevens tusks are displayed at the museum, together with those of a few other mammoth elephants. Next to each set of tusks is an information board with a photo of the elephant and information about its former range, approximate age, the manner in which it died, and the weight and length of the tusks. The manner in which the history of these magnificent creatures has been preserved and displayed is truly impressive!
But although the Magnificent Seven play a major role in the museum there is far more to see and learn. You will find more information about elephants and their social structures, physiology, ecology and conservation status and threats. Stand next to an elephant skeleton or learn about the different age classes and respective heights. You will also learn more about how elephants lose their molars and how big their hearts are.
But elephants are not just history, we are fortunate to still have these animals roaming our wide open parks and you can can read about the current giants of Kruger and where you can expect to see them! If you have any other questions, there is generally a staff member on duty in the museum.
The Letaba Elephant Hall can be found in the Letaba Rest Camp which is located in the north of Kruger National Park, 50 km from the nearest entry gate to the park (Phalaborwa).
