Dutch Windmill - Randburg, Johannesburg

Naby Interessante Punte

The Dutch Windmill, located in Randburg, Johannesburg, is a unique and charming landmark that stands out in the cityscape. Built in the late 1970s, this windmill is a replica of traditional Dutch windmills, reflecting the architectural style and cultural heritage of the Netherlands. It was constructed as part of a larger development project aimed at bringing a touch of European charm to Johannesburg.

In 1940 a Dutch diamond trader know as Messais (More than likely Harry Messais or Mr Diamonds who was born in Amsterdam in 1898 and moved to South Africa in 1918) bought a property in Patrick Street, Olivedale, Randburg and built a house on it. During the Second World War Italian prisoners of war were used to do building alterations on the property. One of these projects was a sunken garden which runs alongside the other, the Dutch Windmill. The prisoners were instructed to build the windmill in accordance to a magazine illustration they were given. The windmill was not merely ornamental, it was fully functional and was used to pump water into irrigation furrows which provided water to all the chicken runs on the property.

The Dutch Windmill was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 10 February 1989.

The windmill, which serves as a visual landmark, is situated on a small rise and is visible from various points in the surrounding area. It is designed with a thatched roof and wooden sails, characteristic of classic Dutch windmills, creating an appealing and picturesque sight. Although it is not functional for milling grain, it has become a popular spot for photography and a distinctive feature in Randburg’s landscape.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Dutch Windmill has become a symbol of community and local pride. The surrounding area, including the windmill's base, often hosts community events and gatherings. Its presence adds a quaint and historical touch to Randburg, offering a glimpse into traditional European architecture and serving as a pleasant contrast to the modern urban environment of Johannesburg.

The Dutch Windmill and Sunken Gardens can be found at 22 Patrick Street, Olivedale, Randburg.
