San Rock Engravings - Klein Springbokoog

Van Wyksvlei was established in 1880 and named after a local farmer, the town lies close to the first, state-funded dam, the Van Wyksvlei dam which was built in 1882 and is still in use today. About 30km from Van Wyksvlei lies the farm Klein Springbokoog (which translates as Small Springbuck Eye), one of the jewels of the Karoo. The farm is one of the biggest collections of San art. The semi desert land of the Karoo is covered with black dolerite boulders which the San craftsmen used to engrave figures on and depict scenes that had symbolic meaning to them. Although San art can be found on almost all farms in the North Western Karoo, the collection on Klein Springbokoog is the most comprehensive and it is definitely worthwhile travelling the sometimes difficult trip on the dirt roads to the farm. Appointments to visit the farm must be made with Rina van Wyk well in advance.
