History: In the early 1800s Dutch farmers in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley felt that their children should rather be schooled in their home language, Dutch, which was a forerunner of Afrikaans. Their teacher was Hermanus Pieters. In l855, long after his passing, the village Hermanuspietersfontein was founded in his honour. In the early 1900's the postmaster shortened the village name to the name we know today, Hermanus. The name Hermanuspietersfontein was revisited this winery, its cellar and its branding and in honour of the people of Hermanuspietersfontein, all their wine names and labels will only be in Afrikaans - the only cellar in South Africa to do so.
