Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve - Cape West Coast

Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve, located on the R27 in the heart of the Cape's West Coast, is a remarkable sanctuary dedicated to wildlife conservation and environmental preservation. Spanning approximately 5,000 hectares, the reserve is renowned for its diverse range of habitats, including coastal plains, bushveld, and rolling hills. This varied terrain supports a wide array of wildlife, from large herbivores like giraffes, zebras, and antelope to smaller species such as jackals and various bird species. The reserve provides a natural haven for these animals, allowing them to thrive in a protected environment.

The reserve which started out as a 1600 hectare cattle farm was bought by Mr Paul Loubser in 1993. Loubser realized the potential of the land to serve as a reserve and tourist destination and over time the infrastructure started to change with the introduction of a restaurant, bar and accommodation. Because of the weak perimeter fencing at this time, only smaller animal species could also be introduced. But this was all threatened in the summer of 2000 when the farm had a huge setback. A large fire destroyed almost everything on the cattle farm. This destruction included a high percentage of fencing, building structures, plant and animal life. But in the years that followed Buffelsfontein cattle farm rose from the ashes like a phoenix and was transformed into what we now know as the Buffelsfontein Game and Nature reserve.

The reserve offers an array of activities for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. Visitors can embark on guided game drives that provide opportunities to observe and photograph the abundant wildlife in their natural habitat. Additionally, the reserve features well-maintained hiking trails that allow guests to explore its diverse ecosystems up close. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding here, as the reserve is home to numerous bird species, including some rare and endemic ones. The picturesque landscapes and rich biodiversity make it a popular destination for eco-tourism.

Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve also plays a crucial role in conservation efforts and environmental education. The reserve is involved in various initiatives aimed at preserving local flora and fauna and promoting sustainable practices. Educational programs and community outreach efforts are integral to the reserve’s mission, helping to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting natural habitats. As a result, Buffelsfontein serves not only as a beautiful destination for visitors but also as a vital contributor to the broader conservation landscape of the Cape's West Coast.

Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve offers visitors the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature on their game drives. The game drives are usually conducted every day 09:00 and 14:00. The reserves rangers promise to take guests on a memorable trip, showing them more about nature and its secrets. Some of the wildlife that visitors could expect to see on a game drive include:

Lion, Cheetah, Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Kudu, Eland, Oryx (Gemsbok), Bontebok, Springbok, Duiker, Steenbok, Caracal

There are however some species which are in the reserve but that are rarely seen on game drives, these include:

African Wildcat, Bat-eared fox, Cape fox, Grey buck, Mountain Reedbuck, Porcupine, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Honey Badger

For those who are basing themselves in the Cape Town area, the reserve also offers day trips departing from pre-arranged locations around the City centre, Waterfront and Atlantic seaboard areas.
