The Chobe Snake Park is situated on the banks of the Chobe River in
Botswana's northern-most village, Kazangula, where the four countries of
Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana meet. The park was developed after the
realisation that there was a serious lack of information on the status, trends
and distribution of reptile species in Botswana. Staff at the Chobe Snake Park
work closely with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, and CARACAL,
the Centre for Conservation of African Resources: Animals, Communities And
Land Use. Their goal is to improve public knowledge of reptiles, threats and
conservation needs.
This unique reptile park provides visitors with a special opportunity of
viewing a number of interesting species, both indigenous and foreign to
Botswana, including Cobra, the deadly Black Mamba, the immensely beautiful
green snake, and the elusive Purple Gloss Snake which lives under ground and
is active only at night.
Chobe Snake Park is an excellent educational facility, and allows visitors to expand their overall knowledge on the various species, with the valuable assistance of expert guides.
Snake Expeditions
After noting that almost half of Botswana is comprised of protected areas,
the Chobe Snake Park provides visitors with the chance to participate in a
number of expeditions into the these wild regions. On these exciting and
informative Snake Expeditions visitors will be able to experience the African
expeditions of old, as park staff venture into the far reaches of Botswana in
search of elusive and little known reptiles.
A small entry fee is required to gain access into the park, and all proceeds are donated to various conservation and educational causes.
