Shamwari Game Reserve

The Shamwari Game Reserve is a magnificent example of how one person can make a BIG difference in the world of conservation. Adrian Gardiner from Port Elizabeth began buying tracts of farm land in the Bushmans River area near Paterson in 1990 and carefully began re-introducing indigenous species.

The Bushmans River Valley region was once a true African wilderness area with large herds of buffalo, zebra and other large herbivores. Cape lion, cheetah, leopard and other big cats flourished in this natural environment. But over the years, hunting and over-grazing by domestic animals had destroyed most of the natural vegetation and wildlife.

Shamwari has now been rehabilitated into one of the finest wilderness areas of the Eastern Cape encompassing over 20,000 hectares. An Animal Rescue and Education Centre has been created with the Born Free Foundation, which contains a museum to help educate the public to the importance of wildlife conservation.

Guests may stay at one of several lush lodges at the reserve which offer game drives and guided wilderness trails. Guests may also indulge in the luxurious spas located at the lodges.
